Safe and secure accommodation is a major concern for students’ families, which makes it a key sales argument for an educational institution. The risks include theft, vandalism, drug abuse, social disorder, threat of terrorism and, in extremely unfortunate cases, suicides.
Electronic locking in student accommodation
Kaba electronic locking devices reduce the frequency of incidents and help identify culprits. These devices can:
- Be programmed to let in the occupants 24 hours a day, but control the access of non-residents e.g. suppliers, technicians and cleaning staff
- Record who entered when and for how long
- Include an optional mechanical override to increase peace of mind by allowing security and medical staff to enter in emergencies
These locks are easy to operate and integrate into the university’s IT system as well as into Kaba master key systems.
Student cards as access keys
Many students do not return keys at the end of term. With thousands graduating per year, this usually means hundreds of apartments that can only be made available to new tenants after the university bears the cost and trouble of replacing the mechanical locks.
Kaba's electronic locks solve this problem outright, as they are operated with student cards – not keys. They are simply programmed to block the old student cards from a certain date and start allowing new ones.
