Access Control - B-Net 91 06

Data safety requires a protection of the content of IT cabinets. Nevertheless, more and more IT cabinets can be found in companies in unprotected areas. Data losses and the failure of networks involve large financial losses jeopardizing the company‘s assets. Therefore, ensure an unhindered and secure information flow in the company.

In cooperation with BURG, the leading manufacturer of closing handles for switch cabinets and magazines, Kaba has developed a solution for an electronic lock, thus providing secure access to IT racks. Because of this outstanding development, it is now possible for the first time to include IT cabinets in already existing access control systems or consider them when implementing new projects. Modern network technologies allow this unproblematic integration in IT structures. Because of different adapter plates, the electronic IEG handle together with the B-Net 91 06 also allows for retrofitting of already installed IT cabinets by different manufacturers.

Access Control - B-Net 91 06

The operational sequence
The aim of this solution is to unlock cabinet doors only for authorized persons with badges using the LEGIC transponder technology. This LEGIC technology is widely spread and used in the access control management of many companies. The access system for an IT cabinet consists of an IEG universal handle and a subterminal B-Net 91 06 by Kaba.

The IEG universal handle is equipped with a LEGIC reader, a LED that displays if the device is ready for operation and an acoustic signal transmitter. Depending on the type of switch cabinet, the handle is mounted to the door by means of an adapter plate. It is then connected to the electronic control unit of the BNet 91 06, which is mounted in the secure inside of a cabinet. The data content of the LEGIC chip is read, transmitted and acknowledged contact-free. The access control takes this data record in order to decide whether the access to the IT cabinet is authorized. It is compared to the stored master records and profiles and validated.

If the access is granted, it is transmitted to the B-Net 91 06. This device now controls the electronic lock for the dooropening, and the desired access is possible. The B-Net 91 06 also monitors the contacts of the cabinet doors, e.g. “door open”, and reports the door status to the control unit. Protection of the connected IT cabinets is achieved by using the same surveillance functions and alarm management procedures of the access system - functions that are used for room monitoring as well. For smaller companies or dedicated applications, the B-Net 91 06 offers an offline functionality. This means that up to 10 employees can have the authorization for opening the relevant IT cabinet. With this solution, an access control is not required because the decision is made by the B-Net 91 06 itself.

Integration into an access control system
A very large benefit is the possibility to integrate this access solution into an existing access control system or considering it when installing new systems so that a holistic security solution is achieved. Hereby, each IT cabinet is connected via a B-Net 91 06 to the access control unit B-Net 92 50 or 92 90. This control unit -as part of the access control system- consults currently stored access profiles and master records of the employees for granting authorizations to open the rack.

The benefit of this solution

  • Fulfillment of the requirements of the Federal Data Protection Act
  • Security for hardware and data in IT cabinets
  • Integration of IT cabinets in access control systems by using existing authorization profiles and master data
  • Use of the wide-spread, contactless LEGIC technology
  • Refitting of already installed IT cabinets
  • Prevention of sabotage within IT structures
  • Compatible with the Bedanet and B-Net Terminal Series
