Today, whatever type of security system is in place, whether it is mechanical, mechatronic or electronic; the customer needs to know that they have the highest level of protection from sabotage possible for the system they have implemented. 

This is certainly the case with a master suite, where unauthorised duplication can mean a complete breach of security. 

Today, Design Right and Copyright protection is no longer a reliable method of protection against unauthorised key duplication on restricted key systems. A manufacturer must be able to provide a patented system to provide the level of security required from a customer who needs a truly protected key system, a system that can even be protected in court.

A patent is a set of exclusive rights granted by a state to an inventor for a limited period of time in exchange for a disclosure of an invention. Typically, a patent application must include one or more claims defining the invention which must be new, inventive, and useful or industrially applicable. Where this has relevance to the lock industry is due to changes in copyright legislation that became effective on the 1st August 1999 and can be interpreted to mean that unless key systems are currently patent protected they will not be legally protected from copying.
